Collette’s Review: Stargirl

Courtesy DC Universe

Stargirl is the newest series set to hit DC’s streaming service as well as The CW. The show follows Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) a high school sophomore whose world gets turned upside down after being forced to move to a small town in Nebraska.

While adapting to her new life Courtney discovers her step-father (Luke Wilson) has been harboring a major secret. That secret being, he was a friend and side-kick to Starman and the Justice Society of America. Also, that he’s been keeping Starman’s staff safe until he finds someone who is worthy enough to wield it. Spoiler alert: It’s her.

The staff takes on a life of its own and chooses Courtney. Rather than being a weapon, the staff becomes a sort of a supporting character. And we see it helping Courtney train to become the hero she’s meant to be.

Overall, the pilot shows promise. The show has a retro feel and light-hearted humor. We get a few flashbacks to set the scene and spike interest, but not enough to make me feel something for the characters…Yet.  I was actually most delighted by the show’s soundtrack that had a mix of fifties favorites and nineties classics.

Unlike its other DC counterparts, this series feels like it’s geared toward a younger audience. The set up to make Stargirl the next role model for young women is there, and teens will definitely feel the girl power radiating off the screen.

This is just a small glimpse of the journey Courtney will take us on as she becomes the newest heroin to the DC Universe. And if she’s given the chance, Stargirl could be an interesting addition to any future CW crossover events.

While the show starts off with a literal bang, I found myself waiting to become hooked. That’s why I’m giving the Stargirl pilot three stars for now. I’ll do my standard three-episode watch before making a definitive decision.

Catch the Stargirl premiere on its new date Monday, May 18th on DC’s streaming service or watch it the next day Tuesday, May 19th at 8/7c on the CW
