For those who remember well The Shining and the suspense that movie created, get ready for the next chapter! Young Danny has grown up, no longer a child, Dan Torrance (Ewan Mcgregor) is trying to run away from himself and the past he vividly remembers.

Dragging himself into a bottle of alcohol dulls the voices, but does not bring him peace. Traveling aimlessly, he steps off a bus and arrives in a quaint town that soon becomes home. Getting his life together while helping others works to center Dan and helps him find peace.

Unbeknownst to him though, evil is caravaning across America, looking for people with the “shine”. Once found, they hurt and kill these special people to suck out what makes them special. Each time they do this they get more power and extend their lives. Thinking themselves minor gods, they hunt for everlasting life at others expense.

Under the radar and not afraid of any authorities, they soon get noticed by another powerful minded individual. Her “Shining” is the strongest anyone has ever known and quickly catches their eye. Coincidentally, she is also psychic pen pals with Dan Torrance. Understanding that these beings are dangerous, she asks for help in hopes of stopping them and saving herself. Strong willed and determined, Abra Stone (Kyleigh Curran) has the power, but not the experience and understanding to stop this evil.

One of my favorite films this year, this movie is so good, I have to read the book now! Ewan Mcgegor is fantastic as an older Danny, watching him struggle with his past and his present is a treat. Another treat was watching Rebecca Ferguson as the evil leader Rose the Hat. She was the perfect mix of evil and cautious that most seem to miss in their character development.

This film was true and fun cinema. And if you have a chance re-watch The Shining before you view this film, do it! The connections through time are strong and well thought out. Director Mike Flanagan delivered a good Stephen King film, which isn’t always the case unfortunately. Though this was probably made easier by a story that knew its beginning and the heart of the suspense, provided by the one and only Stephen King.
