We talk to I Am Mother cast, releasing June 7th on Netflix. + Review

Story: I AM MOTHER is a sci-fi thriller about a teenage girl (Clara Rugaard), who is the first of a new generation of humans to be raised by Mother (Rose Byrne), a robot designed to repopulate the earth after the extinction of humankind. But the pair’s unique relationship is threatened when an injured stranger (Hilary Swank) arrives with news that calls into question everything Daughter has been told about the outside world and her Mother’s intentions

Review: I am Mother is an inventive take on technology and what defines love for humanity. Sleek and driven, you can see the shadow of Ridley Scott and Alien looming over many scenes in this film.

As Director Grant Sputore says “It’s a guy in a suit movie, like Aliens and other great sci-fi films!” Which is a great place to start, but they go far beyond with amazing talent making the difference between B-movie and grade A standards. Of note, young actress Clara Rugaard puts in an amazing performance. I have no doubt we’ll be seeing more of her after this strong and emotional performance. Also of note in this film is the disembodied voice of Rose Byrne, which delivers an eerie humanity with it, disconnected, but empathetic is the best way for me to describe it.

Also to be applauded should be Hillary Swank for her sometimes manic character, and the proverbial “Guy in the suit” Luke Hawker, who had to deliver emotion and character for the actors before Byrne’s voice was added.

Is it the best Sci-fi film of the year, no. Is it fun and worthy of a watch on a Friday night, most definitely.
